A home fire escape plan is a critical part of keeping your family safe. In the event of a fire, there may be only one to two minutes to escape before conditions become life-threatening. That’s not the time to figure out what to do—everyone in the home, from children to adults, needs to know exactly how to respond. A well-made plan outlines two exits from every room, a clear path to safety, and a designated meeting place outside. It also teaches important skills, like staying low under smoke, checking doors for heat, and never going back inside once you’ve escaped.

Practicing your fire escape plan regularly helps build confidence and muscle memory, especially for children who may panic during an emergency. It also gives families a chance to talk through scenarios, assign responsibilities for helping young children or pets, and test smoke alarms to ensure everything works as it should. Fires can happen to anyone, at any time—having a plan means you’re not relying on luck, but on preparation.
